About Us

Our People

Our engineers, geoscientists, and technologists are dedicated to finding innovative yet practical solutions to our clients' technical problems. To that end, we provide ongoing in-house training and mentoring, and encourage participation in conferences, seminars and specialty courses. By creating an environment for growth and opportunity, we have successfully attracted and retained great people, who are the cornerstone of our success.

Our Approach

For each project, we assemble a team of people with the appropriate combination of training and experience for the assignment. A senior professional heads up the team, providing technical input and assuming overall responsibility for the project. We work closely with our clients through to project completion, and are always sensitive to their needs.

Our History

In 1957, Reginald Thurber started a small consulting engineering firm in Victoria, B.C., specializing in soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Within a few years, the company expanded to mainland B.C., and into Alberta. In 1991, Thurber added a Toronto office, and currently has nine offices and more than 200 employees Canada wide. Visit our History page for more details.

Buildings
Good building design makes the most effective use of a site, and at the same time limits impacts on the local environment, both during and after construction. Frequently, this creates geotechnical challenges like high foundation loads or deep excavations that require shoring and underpinning to protect nearby structures. If your building project requires geotechnical investigation, foundation design, cut slope, shoring and underpinning design, lateral earth pressures, seismic design parameters, or materials engineering and testing, Thurber can help. We have provided design and construction services for a variety of clients across Canada.

Thurber has expertise in:

• foundation investigation
• foundation design (footings, piles, rafts, and caissons)
• bearing capacity and settlement analysis
• shoring and underpinning design
• ground improvement
• liquefaction assessment and seismic design
• materials engineering and testing
• materials requirements for LEED projects
• construction inspection
